Wellbeing at Work
Made Accessible
Twerk is a non-profit organisation producing chocolate products for events, working with employees who are on the autism spectrum and guided by coaches.
Communication between neurodiverse employees and their coaches can be challenging through traditional channels. Employees may need time to process and respond, and prefer to communicate at their own pace and in their own way. Twerk needed a digital platform that facilitates this communication through accessible tools like mood indicators, questionnaires, and asynchronous chat.
Creating an accessible communication platform for neurodiverse employees requires deep understanding of diverse communication preferences and the flexibility to support multiple interaction modes.
We developed Dialogz - a mobile and web application that allows employees to express their wellbeing through various formats and communicate with coaches on their own terms. Using our six-step framework, we designed and delivered a platform that respects each user's communication style.
1. IDENTIFY & VALIDATE
We worked closely with Twerk's coaches and consulted accessibility experts to understand the specific communication needs of neurodiverse employees. The key insight: one communication format doesn't fit all. Some employees express themselves best through colours, others through emojis, and others through structured questionnaires.

2. IMPACT MAPPING
We mapped how each feature would support employee wellbeing. Daily check-ins provide coaches with early indicators of challenges. Multiple expression formats ensure accessibility across the spectrum. Asynchronous chat gives employees time to process and respond thoughtfully.
3. TECHNICAL AUDIT
We evaluated authentication solutions that could support diverse user profiles with varying technical abilities. AWS Cognito was selected for secure authentication, and Firebase for push notifications to ensure timely but non-intrusive wellbeing reminders.
4. INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPING
Prototypes were tested directly with employees and coaches at Twerk. This testing revealed crucial insights about interface simplicity, icon clarity, and the importance of predictable navigation patterns for users on the spectrum.
5. DEVELOPMENT & LAUNCH
We developed both a mobile app (iOS & Android) and a web dashboard using Flutter for a consistent experience. The employee app provides daily wellbeing questionnaires and chat, while the coach dashboard offers an overview of team wellbeing patterns and communication tools. The Java backend was deployed on AWS using Lightsail.
6. ITERATE & OPTIMIZE
Ongoing feedback from coaches and employees drives feature improvements. Wellbeing data patterns help coaches identify trends and intervene proactively. The platform continues to evolve based on real usage and emerging accessibility best practices.
Dialogz empowers neurodiverse employees to communicate on their own terms, providing coaches with valuable wellbeing insights while respecting each individual's preferred communication style. The mobile design was created in collaboration with our Xplore Group sister company Fabrikate.

Communication on Every Level
Multiple wellbeing expression formats ensure every employee can participate in a way that feels natural to them.
Express daily wellbeing through colours, smileys, or numbers - simple, visual formats that don't require verbal or written communication skills.
For employees who prefer more detailed expression, configurable questionnaires guide them through wellbeing check-ins with clear, structured questions.
Both employees and coaches can start conversations on diary entries, allowing employees to respond at their own pace and in their preferred moment.
A web-based dashboard gives coaches a comprehensive overview of team wellbeing patterns, enabling proactive support and early intervention.
A multi-platform solution connecting mobile employees with web-based coach tools
The platform consists of a Flutter mobile app for employees, a Flutter web dashboard for coaches, AWS Cognito for authentication, Firebase for push notifications, and a Java backend deployed on AWS Lightsail.
EMPLOYEE CHECK-IN
Daily wellbeing questionnaire completed through the mobile app with preferred expression format.
SECURE PROCESSING
AWS Cognito handles authentication while the Java backend processes and stores sensitive wellbeing data.
COACH INSIGHTS
Coaches access team wellbeing patterns and respond to employees through the web dashboard.
Built entirely in Flutter for mobile and web, ensuring a consistent and accessible experience across all devices.
The front-end is fully built in Flutter, integrating AWS Cognito for authentication and Firebase for push notifications. The backend is written in Java and deployed on AWS using Lightsail. This architecture ensures reliable performance while keeping sensitive wellbeing data secure. The Dialogz app is available on the Google Play Store.
